A good idea certainly doesn't make a young company the next shining star in the startup sky. To do this, you first have to convince with your idea. Probably the most powerful tool for this is a successful pitch. When pitching, the pitch deck helps you as a fundamental part of any startup documentation. It is the ticket to many different situations: investor meetings, customer acquisition, competitions or program applications, for example at startport. It is therefore important that you always have an up-to-date and, above all, a convincing pitch deck at hand. But what is actually convincing? At startport, we receive numerous pitch decks from startups with innovative ideas for logistics and supply chain. Based on these experiences, we want to give you 4 tips for your next pitch deck:

1. Tell a story

A structured story makes it easier to understand the problem and therefore the solution of your product. Stories also trigger human emotions, so you can even inspire and entertain your pitch deck. Telling a story also means that you should keep the pitch deck simple and understandable and not fill it with too much information. Details are usually not super relevant for the reader, because a good pitch deck is often just the key to getting a second meeting or a phone call in which you can go into more detail.

2nd structure

A good pitch deck should make logical sense. This means that each slide builds on the information from the previous slides and reinforces the argument as to why the startup has high potential.
There is information that should definitely be included in every pitch deck:

  • problem
  • solution
  • market
  • Business Model
  • competition
  • Status Quo/Traction
  • team

There are often also specific requirements, for example when you apply to a program. But don't forget the first tip.

3. Target group adjustment

It is a great advantage to always put yourself in the perspective of the reader or listener. Depending on the target group, you can use different versions of the pitch so that it is more specific: When you pitch to investors, the main goal should be to show that the startup has the potential to scale quickly and achieve a multi-billion dollar exit. But when pitching to potential customers, it's much more important to highlight the product offering.

4. Design & content

The design and layout are just as important as the content, but they often don't get the same amount of attention. The design should make the content easier to read, understand, and understand. A design that doesn't do that distracts from the actual content and is confusing. It is therefore not always helpful to enrich the design with many colors.

The pitch deck is a never-ending story and requires constant adjustment and improvement. So don't worry if it isn't perfect. It probably never will be. But if you manage to keep the pitch deck simple, communicate the vision clearly and make it easy to understand, you have a higher chance of being successful in investor or customer meetings.
