Quay walls and sheet piling walls are exposed to fluctuating water levels and changing weather conditions, which cause long-term damage: Rust, concrete damage or cracks can occur. In order to identify and repair such damage in good time, the duisport Group regularly inspects the quay walls and sheet piling walls in Duisburg Harbour. Until now, this check has been done manually. To simplify the process, StartPort startup Mavisoft has been supporting duisport as part of a pilot project since December 2021 in analyzing images of sections of quaywalls and detecting and classifying potential damage. To do this, Mavisoft uses artificial intelligence (AI) and Digital twinning.
Mavisoft's solution reduces workload and provides valuable additional information
For duisport, Mavisoft analyses existing images of the quay walls. This was recorded in advance by drone and then transferred to a digital model (digital twin).
Using algorithms, damage was then identified and assessed in terms of severity (figure on the left). For duisport, the AI-based analysis is more time-efficient and also more accurate, as it is not based on subjective experience. In order to obtain accurate analysis results, the startup includes additional information from the startup i4Sea about weather, Rhine level and usage behavior.
This analysis, and thus the first phase of the pilot project, has already been successfully completed. After evaluating the results, it is decided whether the startup's solution should continue to be used. Felix Musolf, Digitalization and Innovation Manager at duisport, is convinced of the start-up's commitment: “The team is very motivated and was able to inspire us to work together. They are on fire for their product and believe in the benefits. ”
Startport innovation platform successfully connected
The young AI research company Mavisoft is part of the sixth batch of the startport start-up program, the innovation platform for logistics and supply chain. At the end of 2021, the exchange was initiated by startport and the AI surveying start-up was able to win duisport as a customer. Initial pilot projects are important for startups, says StartPort managing director Alexander Garbar: “In this specific project, Mavisoft has the opportunity to impress with its business model and thus also gain a long-term customer and advocate. This is very valuable for startups. ”
About Mavisoft: Mavisoft is an AI research company that offers the leading sustainable solution for automated damage detection and preventive maintenance of industrial plants. Mavisoft uses data collected by aerial drones, water drones, or other third parties to create digital twins of the plant. With the help of artificial intelligence, these images are analyzed and all damage and its severity are automatically identified. They are also able to improve the life cycle of the systems and provide repair cost estimates for the damage. Mavisoft is currently working with key players in the maritime industry, including the ports of Antwerp, Amsterdam, North Sea Port, Zeebrugge, DP World and Schiphol Airport. Mavisoft was founded in Rotterdam in 2018 by Theodor Preststulen. Before founding Mavisoft, Theodor Preststulen worked in the shipping industry as an agent, ship operator and engineer for digital transformation.
About startport: As a subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport), startport GmbH is committed to initiating a creative culture of innovation and actively promoting further development in the area of logistics and supply chain. With this claim, it promotes and challenges young startups that, together with duisport and the companies based here, are developing pioneering ideas for the leading logistics hub in the heart of Europe.
